It seems like a broken record in so many ways, and yet broken records do not improve or at least not as much as the Norfolk have improved over recent weeks. It was still not enough to get the win although more deserving than some of the games we have won this year. Shoreham were delighted at the end of the match and rightly so, their pack disrupted the set piece and provided good field position for their attacks as well as some cheap points gifted through poor discipline.

The Norfolk effort was faultless to a man, and with 5 minutes left the game was still very much within reach despite 20 minutes of play with only 14 men due to the sin binnings of Mike Slator and Tom Kemp. The match started at a good pace and the game plan was effective when used, the first points came for the away team from a penalty more or less in front of the posts but it was not long before McMichael was given a similar opportunity to draw level. Shoreham then went ahead again through a converted try but again the Norfolk drew level quickly with a Robotham try. A penalty each moved the scores to 13 all at half time.

The second half had all the excitement of the first but Shoreham were more clinical and took their chances very well. Poor discipline cost us dear again when Mike Slator was sent to the sin bin just before half time and during this period the visitors struck through in the mid-field exploiting the extra man effectively. The lead was extended after another penalty in front of the posts which gave Shoreham an 8 point gap to defend. McMichael reduced the deficit to just 5 with a well struck penalty but Shoreham skipper Gavin Cox put the game out of reach with a superb drop goalin the closing minutes.

Both teams acknowledged the good play and exciting nature of the match and the positives are outweighing the negatives at the moment. A harsh lesson needs to be learned quickly though about discipline. Conceding penalties is always going to make a match harder to win, but nine points from penalties is just too much at our level of rugby.
