Writing a losing match report is neither fun nor easy, especially when positives are few and far between. Credit must go to Shoreham for a solid performance, a simple but effective game plan, for being quicker to the ball and breakdowns and for generally appearing to be hungrier. It was hard to put a finger on what was going wrong but it was clear from the start that something was definitely not right.

The Norfolk did have the first chance at points with a penalty, but uncharacteristically McMichael sent the kick wide. Shoreham scored eventually after much pressure and some good scramble defence from the Norfolk going over in the corner. The conversion missed but another chance was not long in coming after several bouncing balls were watched or aimlessly hack at only for a Shoreham player to dive on and secure. A penalty was next for Shoreham which was converted and shortly after another try under the posts. When several things are going wrong, a steady set piece is vital and that was unfortunately another thing that never really materialised. The Norfolk were not without chances though but most fell foul to knock-ons or forward passes. Osibogun put down one on the right hand side after a break from Cambell and Hodson, and with his power and pace it was possibly a scoring chance.

At half time there was only one team in the game despite the usual amount of effort which is all you can ask of your players. The difference between the two teams was small and yet massive, Shoreham were more aggressive in contact, faster to claim a loose ball, and much keener to apply pressure. The Norfolk appeared pedestrian and lacklustre throughout, and even when there was a break, the support was too slow arriving which led to turnovers. There was one moment of joy in the match when for a brief period the Norfolk applied pressure through Aaron Quayle and James Baldwin Scored his first try for the club. Depressing as it was, it would be very easy to grumble but we must not. It was only one game and every team has the occasional off day. That was definitely an off day!

Despite arguably the worst performance for several years, the score was not catastrophic and the belief that things were going to click never really deserted. The club looks forward to welcoming Heathfield next week and the hope of defending our unbeaten home record in all competitions this year is renewed by the bitter disappointment of the dire performance against a good Shoreham team. Training Tuesday and Thursday 7pm at Wiston, some hard work needed.
