The Norfolk welcomed new team Horley to Wiston recreation
ground this weekend with another team filled out with people out of position
and new people all together.
The game started with a dropped restart and a scrum to Horley straight away,
the visitors showed little willingness to attack though early on and kicked
away possession several times. The error of that tactic was demonstrated first
by full back Paul McMichael who ran the ball back with interest, and then by
Dan Robinson who needs no invitation to demonstrate his power. Robinson scored
the first try of the game after a McMichael break and a strong run from Hodson
who made a triumphant return from injury leading the pack superbly. Stewart saw
numbers on the narrow left hand side and passed to Robinson who had skipper Ali
Hoare outside him but did not need any help going over in the corner. In a
nearly identical situation only minutes later, Robinson this time gave a well
timed pass out of contact and Hoare did the rest with a jink and side step to
cross the line. Duncan Cambell was next on the score sheet with a well executed
backs move in the centres where he broke several tackles on the way to the
line. Cambell then needed to go off for treatment which only compounded matters
for the opposition, Matt Laker replaced Cambell in the centres and business
resumed. Ever changing personnel is something a small club has to learn to deal
with unfortunately, but the Norfolk thrives on uncertainty, Big Jim Palmer took
a break which meant Ali Hoare moved from the wing to second row and then to
number 8 when Hodson required treatment. Hat-trick man Laker benefitted from
the change as a blind side move from a scrum led to him receiving the ball with
about thirty metres to go but his opposite number could not get to him to stop
the inevitable. Jez Stewart inflicted further points with a similar movement
down the right hand side with Laker and Hoare in support but his pace was more
than enough to see him through.
A very positive first half was backed up by a similar second half effort in
which some off the handling and passing was sublime. The Norfolk adopted a
style of champagne rugby that is almost impossible to defend against, nobody
dying with the ball and everyone looking to put the sensible pass in. Mike
Slator scored his first try of the season with a powerful run to cap off
another excellent performance. Newark finished off a multi-phased move with his
turn of pace to make it two in two weeks, and Laker completed his hat-trick
with two in the second half. Hodson was instrumental in the third of Laker's
tries as he scooped the ball up and ran into space before passing onto Laker to
go on and score.
Another superb performance, two more debuts, and nine tries in the bag. Whoever
plays, wherever they play, this team always tries to play a fun style of rugby
that is often so successful. Eveyone played well, special mention to the back
row of Hodson, Robinson, and Bavstock, all of whom were magnificent in both
attack and defense. Well done all. |
