To look at the score you might think you can work out how
the game went and it looks like another one sided victory for a very strong
Worthing team. I'm sure they would be the first to agree though that it was not
the case.
The game started at a frantic pace and the Norfolk had the first chance at
points through the boot of McMichael, he missed the long range effort though
and it was Worthing who made good their first real opportunity after some very
tough defense from the home team eventually going over under the posts to open
up a seven point lead. McMichael was on target with his second attempt and the
first half was packed with excitement and fast paced attacking rugby. Worthing
used their large number of ball carriers to punch holes in the Norfolk defense
but the men in red held hard for long periods without the ball. The mid-filed
were magnificent in the tackle and the Norfolk pack won some good turnovers at
the breakdown. Tim Laker made a fine try saving tackle to deny the visitors in
the corner but just before the half was over the breakthrough finally came.
14-3 at half time was a fair reflection on the first half although the Norfolk
had twice gone close only to be denied by determined tackling.
The second half saw the same guts and passion from both teams and the Norfolk
earned several penalties with some pressure and good ball retention, the
Worthing defense proved that they are the best team in the league though and
denied several breaks from turning into points. McMichael kicked a second
penalty to reduce the gap before defense turned into attack when Robotham
picked up a loose ball and kicked on for McMichael to chase, with 3 defenders
in hot pursuit the former Steyning football showed superb control to kick on
again and tough down for the score. The conversion was good meaning a 1 point
game and that McMichael was responsible for every single point. The next five
minutes were tense and exciting with both teams looking like breaking away but
it was the relentless waves of Worthing attack which eventually told on the
hour. From a lineout space was created and a Worthing centre broke through for
a score and an eight point lead.
With only fifteen minutes left the brave Norfolk resistance was finally broken
and Worthing sensed this change and capitalized intelligently. Although some of
the tries scored in the last few minutes were somewhat fortunate, they deserved
the win and showed just how to exploit any weaknesses in their opposition. It
may sound like clutching at straws but it truly was an excellent game of rugby
and despite the loss everyone involved was very upbeat about the way the game
was played. All credit to Worthing who pulled away in the end but I think they
know they were in a game and a half. The referee was also fantastic and kept
the game flowing throughout whilst also controlling any flaring tempers.
The Norfolk is looking for a win away from home against Newick on Saturday and
with a good number of players back from injury the belief is starting to grow.
