A gritty and determined performance with plenty of excitement and a fantastic comeback was not enough to get the result as the Norfolk suffered another defeat in the league.

The Steyning team have lost all of their league games since topping the table in November when they beat Worthing3. With a list of injured players growing and bordering on the ridiculous this week it was a somewhat scratch team which turned out at the racecourse this week. That is not to take anything away from the heart and commitment shown during the match which was top notch. The game quickly settled into the traditional arm wrestle with both packs keen to pressurise the set piece and the usual determined tackling, it was the Norfolk pack who seemed to be on top with the first quarter gone. Plumpton were however very clever at the breakdown and their first points came from a penalty for holding on. Minutes later they crossed for the first try of the game with a fine wide pass to the unmarked winger who finished the move off near the posts for the easier kick.

In the second half the Norfolk managed to hold on to the ball for brief periods and were able to exert some pressure, the first points came from the boot of Paul McMichael after a penalty for diving over the ruck and killing the ball. From the next restart the Norfolk set up a ruck and a well chased box kick from Martin Newark bounced into the greatful arms of Simon Robotham. Robotham passed the ball onto skipper Ali Hoare who in turn passed onto Martin Newark to finish what he started. For a while it seemed that the game was turning in our favour and another score seemed well within reach, unfortunately several mistakes cost dear and again knock ons at key times killed the momentum. Plumpton won the game with a penalty kick as Matt Hodson was sent to the sin bin. The belief did not die though and one final chance was halted by a knock on from the normally safe hands of Robotham when Rich Addy offloaded out of the tackle.

Despite the recent run of results the Norfolk showed great spirit and belief to push the hosts all the way to the wire but it was mistakes and penalties which were the downfall of the team. Well done to everyone for a superb effort and never giving up, that illusive win is just around the corner.
