The last league game of the season and a positive end which was hard fought for and well deserved! The Norfolk travelled to Billingshurst and the Weald School where Barns Green ply their trade. When last our two teams met an awful start left the Norfolk reeling and after a valiant fight back it was the opening few minutes which gave victory to Barns Green.

Keen to rectify this it was the Norfolk who got the ideal start, winning a penalty from the kick off and beginning an assault on possession and territory. Early breaks and pressure amounted to nothing though and frustrations simmered as several passes went behind the receiver or forward from the passer and all momentum off the attack was lost time and time again. The pressure did tell after ten minutes when the Barns Green defence was caught offside in mid field giving an easy opportunity for 3 points. McMichael slotted coolly and our travelling support went wild. From the next kick off the Norfolk worked back up the field again with Mike Slator making a scything break only to throw the ball forward rather than passing to his captain Ali Hoare just inside the BG 22. From the scrum the pack applied serious pressure to the set piece and won a series of penalties moving closer to the Green line. Hodson took the pass from Jez Stewart and crashed the ball within a few feet of the line before McKenna pirouetted over the line taking several defenders and a bull elephant with him. The Norfolk dominated the majority of the half until Barns Green put some attacking moves together and poor decision making gave them the territory they needed. Green kicked a penalty with four minutes remaining in the half and then scored the equalizer on half time.

The second half got off to an edgy start with the scores locked at 10-10 and more wayward passing thwarted any decent attacks. The game threatened to turn when Tim Laker was taken off the field requiring stitches to a nasty cut on his head but his brother Matt broke the deadlock with a fine run to score under the posts, Robotham spotted a gap and fed Laker who then beat 3 players on his way to the line. Robotham then took his own try a few minutes later to open a 14 point gap and the pack took control of the game dominating lineouts and scrums and securing the messy breakdown. McMichael missed a chance to put the game out of reach and minutes later denied the Norfolk a certain try when he was adjudged to have blocked a defender meaning White had to forego the pleasure of diving under the posts to score. Another 2 chances went begging one where White knocked on a pass from Ali Hoare with the try line almost at his mercy, the second where McMichael this time found himself in front of Slator and was again penalised for blocking.

All things considered it was a usual tight affair between two evenly matched teams, derby matches are always a bit scrappy and this was no exception. Credit to a resilient opposition who never gave up and scored a late consolation try but praise must go to the boys who gave everything in the pursuit of victory and despite the scrappy and frustrating nature of the game, everyone kept their patience and stuck to the game plan. It was a positive end to a fantastic season in which the team surpassed all expectations for the third year running to finish strongly in the intermediate league.
