Another week into the season and a far more settled performance in which the Norfolk dominated throughout and led from the first few minutes. Preparations this week centred around new personnel becoming familiar with the lineout calls and game plans, so a longer warm up pre-match gave us more time before kick off than we knew what to do with. But if there were new personnel it certainly did not show during the game when the most controlled performance of the season in front of the Norfolk crowd put paid to Newick's best efforts.

As has been the way in every game this season the Norfolk took the lead through a McMichael penalty which opened his personal account of seven points for the game, the opposition penalised for being off-side at a ruck. Good defence from Newick was the only thing that kept the score from going up early on in the first half with several breakouts stopped just short, the pack piled on the pressure through man of the match Aaron Quayle (maverick) who nearly got two charge downs and forced several hurried clearances.

Before long the Norfolk had made several breaks into opposition territory but come away empty handed each time, until from a driving lineout Matt Hodson burrowed over from close range. Robotham was held up over the line and Wilkinson was stopped by an injury and the referees whistle when he was possibly heading for the line. The half also saw a number of disruptive injuries meaning the pack had to be reshuffled when Mike Slator took a bang on the head and needed to be replaced by Dan Robinson who marked his return to action with a try.

The second half started as well as the first had finished, with more pressure this time leading to more points, the Norfolk used a move from a penalty, and from the second phase, Robinson charged through the defence to score with McMichael adding the extra 2. Discipline eventually cost us when Newick were awarded several penalties on the line before eventually driving over. The game settled again though until Aaron Quayle got his reward for a consistent harrying of the opposition when he picked up a fumble and headed in to score. Newick scored a late interception try when Jez Stewart took a quick tap and headed off on a darting run but unfortunately his pass found the wrong pair of hands for the Newick winger to run in.

It was another enjoyable game in beautiful conditions and there is a good feeling around the club now, which has never really left from last season. 22 people made training on Thursday and it is no coincidence that the performance was controlled and organised. We look forward to the 2nd round of the EDF junior vase away against Aldershot, and in the next few weeks the emergence of a second 15 at the Norfolk. Thanks to Newick RFC and the referee for a great game of rugby.
