So, third out of the league hat for this season were Lewes
2, our first away game, our first ever game at Lewes Rugby Club and the first
time this season we have been able to actually make a complete selection on the
Thursday night prior to the game.
With TinTin nursing a broken nose following the game last week, it was a
pleasure to welcome back front row man mountain Richard "Porty"
McKenna for his first game of the season. Always entertaining for the crowd, he
proved he is still able to mix it with the best of them with an impressive
display of propping, and even more entertaining his charging runs from the back
of the ruck or maul. It is always fun watching the opposition centre shit
themselves when they realise it is them he is running towards! Also making
their first appearances this season were Rich "Nutter" Addy, Simon
"SOAP" Robotham, who appears to have recovered from undertaking the
Three-Peaks Challenge some weeks ago and Harry, who sat on the bench, and came
on for the last 20 or so, replacing Debs at hooker. Finally a debut for Gavin
on the wing who proved to have a good turn of pace and handling skills to
match.
It was a perfact day for Rugby and from the Whistle it was apparent that the
Norfolk were looking to continue the form they showed against Crowboruogh in
the second half last week. Strong attack from the ever dominant scrum and line
out should have resulted in a big half time lead, but some dogged defence from
Lewes kept the score to 8-0 at half time, with Tim Laker slotting a penalty and
vice-captaion Jerry Stewart going over for an unconverted try. The Norfolk were
definately the more organised side and the talk at half time was to solidify
the breakdown, remain patient and play with a smile!
Lewes appeared more organised in the second half, but the strength of the
Norfolk scrum and a dominant line out saw the Norfolk extend their lead with a
penalty from replacement number 10 Matty "Roland" Laker, and tries
from skipper Matt "Mooey" Hodson and the aforementioned season
debutant SOAP, neither were converted, but both were scored wide and were
tricky kicks. The Norfolk should have scored again through Mike
"Chemist" Slator, who, with replacement hooker, Harry, made a great
break through the centre, some great interpassing to pass the last 2 defenders,
only to knock the ball on during the final pass. Lewes threw everything into
the game for the last 10 and were rewarded with a consolation try with minutes
remaining.
Another great game and a good performance from the Norfolk. A fun atmosphere,
along with Matty Laker, kept the crowd entertained, and we all looking forward
to hosting Heathfield 2 at Wiston next Saturday.
