Saturday the 9th October saw a slightly depleted Norfolk
side make the short (ish) journey down to Chichester to take on the 3rd string
side of one of the larger clubs in West Sussex. The conditions were absolutely
perfect for both players and supporters alike, although maybe a little warm for
the more rotund of us (Jez and Chemist!)
Due to various injuries and unavailability we were forced to start the game
with 14, giving the home team a man advantage of which they more than took
advantage, and possibly giving us a mental disadvantage which may have started
beating us before the first whistle was blown. However, take nothing away from
Chichester, who made the first 20 minutes seem like an hour, scoring almost at
will with every possession they won. It is difficult to remember any specific
details from most of the first half as we were run ragged for most of the time
and trying to scramble our defence and run damage limitation. The first period
was not all doom and gloom as Tim Laker managed to convert a penalty gained
from one of our only decent attacking possessions of the half. Luckily our
numbers were brought to full complement by Chi chi's brother Glenn, and in my
own opinion, half time could not come too soon!
After this welcome break things seem to have changed a little and we were able
to nullify a lot of Chichester's main strikes and exert a little pressure of
our own. An extended period of such pressure was rewarded with a try for Ben
"Monkey" Midgeley, with the extras being added by Tim to bring us
into double figures! This was the tale of the second half for us until the
dying seconds when the home teams conditioning and organisation was just too
much for our tired defense. The final score came in at 56-10 but will be
recorded as 50-10 as teams can only record a 40 point victory?
All credit and congratulations to Chichester who thoroughly deserved the
victory, as accomplished in accepting the victory as they were in creating it.
Special mention to Glenn for helping us out, and to Chris Knott for his first
full game for the boys.
As for the Norfolk, we need to move on and learn our lessons from this game. We
still worked well at times but we struggle with some basic errors. We need to
be able to compete in the first half, increasing the intensity in our
preparations which are lacklustre at best.
We now have lights at Wiston so until further notice our training will be back
on grass, where we can work on some of the things that this game highlighted.
This can only be done with decent numbers and previous organisation so please
let me know if you can or can't attend and we can plan accordingly. I spend
some effort and my own money texting everyone to remind them so the least I
expect is a reply containing a yes or a no.
See you all during the week (hopefully!) and we have Sussex Police in the
knockout competition next week, a competition we can target for success if we
get our preparation right.
