Pulborough 2 0 - Norfolk Arms 34
Following the excellent performance against Holbrook last week, we had high
hopes for our away fixture against Pulborough 2 on a very hot afternoon. A few
changes to the line up from the week before saw Ben "Monkey" Midgley
moving to Hooker in the absence of Matthew "Debs" Carver and Tomasz
"Scrabble" Greszeckz at prop; Pete "Horse" Hoare returned
to the second row and we saw the first outing for Jim "Hightower"
Palmer alongside him. The back row saw the return of
Jim"Jimbo"Manvell and Action Man Dan, joining skipper Matthew
"Mooey" Hodson. Toby started at scrum half again, with Tim "One
Hand" Laker slotting into the number 10 position. The back line started
similar to last week, with Mike "Chemist" Slator and Iain
"Bosch" White sharing the centre positions , Mike "Wilko"
Wilkinson at Full back and Mattheo and Ian "Robbo" Robbins on the
wings.
The Pulborough team looked young and fit, generally, and we were concerned that
the stifling heat would be a factor. As it turned out, the Norfolk were pretty
much dominant throughout the game. That said, it was not until half way through
the first half that the first score was recorded, with Mooey going over for the
first of a fine brace. Tim Laker missed the conversion. About 5 minutes later,
it was time for the front row to get on the score sheet with a well worked try
from a line out maul; the ball eventually being grounded by Badders. Again,
Laker missed the conversion. About 5 minutes later, it was skipper Mooey who
scored this second with Laker this time converting. Just on the Whistle of Half
time, a fine move in the centres saw Chemist go over, again, Laker converted.
Half Time score 24-0
The second half was a much more even affair, with both teams appearing somewhat
drained by the heat. A couple of injuries forced some changes in the Norfolk
team, with Scrabble having to retire hurt and Matty Laker, on as a sub, landed
with his (considerable) weight on his ribs marking the end to his day. However,
with a nearly full bench to choose from, it was great to be able to give
everybody a run out, with Grant Jones, Andy, Josh and Jordan all getting a run
out in the second half. Tries from Jim "Why the long face?" Manvell
and full Back Wilko completed a successful days work for the Norfolk squad.
The difference in atmosphere within the club compared to the end of last season
is astonishing. It is great to see so many guys not only training, but giving
every game their undivided attention and concentration. Long may it continue!
Next week, we are back home, entertaining Chichester 4 at Wiston, with a 3pm
KO. Also, given the number of people we have floating around currently, we have
arranged a friendly away at Hove 5's the Saturday after (15th), all are welcome
to play, but starting priority will be given to all the guys who have spent
time on the bench so far this season. Ree |
