Hove 4's Vs Norfolk Arms

The Norfolk played host to Hove 4's on Saturday, even though it was supposed to be an away game! Due to some miscommunication and after great efforts from some of the boys, the Wiston pitch was hastily made ready for it's first game of the new season.

After an unusually intense (but most welcome) warm up, the game started with both sides sporting full 15's and very healthy numbers on the bench (long may this continue for both sides, knowing the difficulties from last season!). Early pressure by the visitors lead to an infringement which was punished by the boot to give Hove the lead early on. This was to be relatively short lived after some great play from the Norfolk boys, a great break by Matt Laker after the Hove midfield defence went missing briefly. Backed up by some dominant forward play at the set piece and breakdown, the sustained effort was rewarded with the aforementioned Laker crashing over for a try. Unfortunately the conversion attempt was unsuccessful and fairly soon afterwards the lead changed hands with Hove crossing the line and converting to put them 10-5 up at the break.

After half time, the Norfolk seemed to lose focus and discipline, both playing the game and reacting to decisions made by the referee. This lead to a string of penalties and eventually gifted Hove a try as our defence seemed to be more interested in handbags rather than actually playing the game! We were able to put this behind us however, and towards the end of the game started to put together some excellent phases of play, advancing towards the Hove try line and inevitably scoring through new player Richard (Badders). A missed conversion left the game in Hove's favour 15-10 and this was to be the final score.

There were many plus points to be taken from the game, some fantastic support play and defensive organisation in the first half among them, but our lack of discipline (both physical and verbal) eventually lead to our downfall. We prove time and time again that when we channel our aggression correctly and play with ball in hand we are a force to be reckoned with, and would suggest that as a squad we strive to do this at every opportunity, and to leave the verbals and whingeing to the playground and the football pitch! First home game next week (oh wait!) against Holbrook 2's, club day and bring your sombrero for Mexican night! ¡Adios Amigos!
