Games between the Norfolk and Barns Green have in recent
years always been very close affairs and this Saturday proved to be no
different with an end to end game that could have gone either way, but, on this
occasion, it was Barns Green who scored last, and therefore took the plaudits!
As it was half term, a couple of the regulars were not about for this game,
most notably captain Mooey and hooker Debs. Luckily, we had heads available to
cover these absences, so Royster donned the number 2 shirt and Rich
"Nutter" Addy got to play number 8. Front row regulars Badders and
Monkey did a sterling job supporting royster, with Horse and Big Jim locking
together in the second row. Nutter was joined in the back row by Bavers and
Wilko - given the opportunity to have a run out in the forwards
("Honestly, that's where I play!!!"). he actually had a stormer from
the back of the scrum, was instrumental in most of the action and never shied
away from a single tackle.
Jez was back in the 9 shirt, and he was partnered by Toby at 10. Bosh and Robbo
shared the centre positions, with Matteo and Josh on the wings. Andy W took up
the full back position.
It was Barns Green whose pressure paid off first as they ran in an unconverted
try after about 5 minutes. The Norfolk were generally dominant in both the
scrum and the line out but a bit like last week it was not instantly gelling!
Bosh bought the score to within a few point with a gentle penalty about 10
minutes later, and Barns reciprocated some eight minutes later with a penalty
of their own. Not to be outdone, Bosh floated another penalty over about 6
minutes later, before Robbo went over for the first Norfolk Try on about 37
minutes, which Bosh was unable to convert. The half was not over yet though
with a Penalty for each side awarded; Barns converted theirs, the Norfolk did
not! giving a half time score of 11-11.
The start to the second half was fantastic. Pretty much from the first play,
the Norfolk stormed forward with Wilko going over for a try after less than a
minute of the half. which was unconverted by Toby this time. Five minutes
later, it was Barns who added to their score with a converted try. To and Fro
To and Fro.
At aroung this sort of time, the referee pulled his calf muscle and was unable
to continue the game. Instead of completeing the game there and then it was
agreed that Roland would take over reffing, which put the Norfolk down to 14
players and Barns were good enough to drop a winger and the game continued at
14 a side.
The Norfolk kept the pressure on Barns and were rewarded with 2 excellent tries
after 13 (Jez) and 20 (Bosh) minutes one of which was converted giving a
healthy scoreline to the Norfolk of 28-18. This seemed tospur Barns into
action, and whilst the NOrfolk were not to add to their score again during the
game, Barns ran in two tries in the last ten to snip the win at 32-28.
All in not a bad performance from the Norfolk, maybe lacking a little in
defence and perhaps on occasion a little greedy in attack.. A thoroughly
entertaining game to watch (and I did not run the line woohoo), and a messy
evening of baldness in the Norfolk afterwards. |
