After a well deserved week off the Norfolk Arms travelled to Crawley to take on St. Francis at their home ground. We were greeted with yet another warm sunny day and while this weather is great for the supporters it would be nice for a bit more rain to soften the ground some more!

The first half was not the best period of play for the Norfolk and the hosts took an early lead through a lapse in defence. We managed to gain some possession after this due to some decent scrummage and lineout work but some very aggressive defence from a quick (and sometimes offside!) St. Francis midfield. To add to this another try for St. Francis saw them pull away 10 - 0, but some good phases from the Norfolk saw an advance up the field. The forwards managed to draw in the defence and some rare quick ball was moved wide at pace and Ian Robins crossed the line for a try, but we were unable to convert and at half time were down by 5.

The Norfolk definitely raised their game after the break and saw a few changes, Matt Laker replacing his brother Tim and Alfie Allingham on for Rich Addy in the second row. Tries came for Matt Laker and Dan Robinson after some sustained pressure and one was converted by Simon Robotham. St. Francis got one back and the extras brought the game to a 17 - 17 cliffhanger.

It stayed that way until late into the game as frustration at the breakdown boiled over, the persistent handling of the ball by the home side causing a moment of madness for Allingham leading to a red card. Down to 14 with only a few minutes to go the boys were under pressure and this finally got the better of some dogged tryline defence and St. Francis touched down. The missed conversion was the last play and it was all over.

Bad luck and some things to work on during the week for a home game against Barns Green next week, and the next Club day so come along and enjoy!

Special thanks to the Mirror newspaper whose free pint offer saw us buying every copy between Steyning and Crawley, and Auntie Pam with some serious recycling to do!
