Hot in Hellingly!
It was always going to be a difficult game, travelling away to Hellingly, who
were relegated from division 1 last season. The Home team did not disappoint
and in very hot, humid conditions the game turned out to be just as hard as the
ground!
Hellingly took an early lead with a try and managed a period of sustained
pressure, kept from scoring more only by some dogged defence and some unforced
errors. True to the usual Norfolk stubbornness, we soaked up the pressure and
started to exert some of our own, and along with some good handling and support
lead to a try for Martin Newark, just out of the shortest retirement ever!
Unfortunately the boys went to sleep and gave Hellingly a soft try almost
straight away, but managed to pull back with another well worked try for Iain
White. The tiredness struck again and another easy score came for the home
side, who went in to the break in front..
The second half saw Hellingly converting more pressure to points but it did not
go all their way. More good chaotic play from the Norfolk threatened the try
line, causing the Hellingly players to infringe and one was awarded a yellow
card. This presented the Norfolk's best scoring opportunity in the second half,
but we were unable to take that chance.
The rest of the game was scrappy, with injuries for both sides preventing any
flowing play, and the Norfolk finishing the game with 14 men as we had run out
of replacements. The final whistle blew with Hellingly victorious 35 - 12, and
I for one welcomed a cold shower afterwards! I have to mention the way the
Norfolk boys carried themselves throughout, giving as good as they received,
and I was proud to lead them on the day.
Thank you for all your efforts and also to the supporters for taking the trip
with us. Shoreham at home next week, guaranteed to be a cracker, come along to
support then back to the Norfolk Arms for some refreshment afterwards! |
