Home, and away!
The Norfolk Arms started the league campaign with a home fixture versus Hove
Volunteers, and we were lucky to have a much more healthy pool of players to
pick from! With the sun beating down, a very keen Hove side arrived early and
showed their intentions early with an intense warm up.
The Norfolk boys started the game with the kick and had the slope in the first
half but this didn't stop Hove from taking an early lead with quick recycled
ball and no one at home on the blind side, and the extras gave them a 7 - 0
lead. The boys rallied round and some aggressive play up the middle and some
good recycling and handling saw Ian Robins cross the line for his first try for
the club. More of the same saw a great midfield break from Dan Robinson
(through some heavy defense!) and the other Iain (White) was in support for the
try. This conversion WASN'T missed by Paul McMichael and with his 50% strike
rate for penalties, we went in to the break 15 - 7 up. (Sorry Yids!)
The half time break was obviously not long enough for the Norfolk and a lapse
in concentraton saw Hove take an interception try which was then converted,
cutting our lead to 1 point. A couple of changes saw Ryan come into the back
row and put in a monster hit almost immediately. Wilko, the late boy, was put
to good use at 13 and Matt Wilcock provided suitable cover for Richard McKenna
in the front row. Hove started to push hard and only some great defense kept
them out.
The final 10 minutes took the Norfolk from our own line to some good pressure
in the opposition 22 and some indiscipline was punished minutes before the
final whistle to give the Norfolk Arms an 18 - 14 victory. Well played to all,
especially Alfie Allingham who looked far more comfortable at lock, enough to
win him Man of the Match.
Special mention to Roy Flower for keeping us supplied with much needed water,
and Martin Newark for coming out of retirement to run the line!
Hellingly away next weekend and Shoreham at home the week after, when we have
our first Club Day. All welcome, wives, girlfriends, mates, children, pets,
strangers (not for long!) so come along to the game and the pub afterwards for
a few beers! |
