Isle of White
EDF Junior Vase, Away
5th September 2009
Lost 13-0
Here We Go Again!

The Norfolk Arms travelled to the Isle of Wight RFC to take part in the first round of the Junior Vase with slightly depleted numbers but a decent side none the less. After a fairly enjoyable ferry journey a few nerves started showing, it being the first game of the season, but the boys got on with the task in hand. It was evident fairly early on that it was going to be a very hard game, the opposition not giving an inch on their home turf, but we managed to match the physicality pretty well.

Both sides struggled to win clean ball as the breakdown was hotly contested and a rare lapse in discipline allowed the home team to take a penalty kick for a 3 point lead. The Norfolk had a couple of chances but were unable to convert them and at the break (which was most needed!) the score remained 3-0. It was more of the same in the second half, with both teams attacking and defending well at times. The contact was just as intense and the set piece was still scrappy. A well worked passage of pressure from the Isle of Wight saw them cross the line for a try but they were unable to add the extras. More good play saw the home side edge further ahead, mixed with a little lapse in concentration and we were blowing a bit!

A last minute opportunity for us to gain a deserved try was stopped just short of the line and the final whistle saw the Isle of Wight come out on top, 13-0. It was a great display for a first game and everybody acquited themselves fantastically well. Special mention goes to new boys Alfie and Harry, both of whom played well, and man of the match Jim Manvell who even managed to turn up on time! Well done to the Referee for allowing a good contest and thanks to the Isle of Wight boys for their hospitality.

First home game next week against Hove Volunteers in the league, hope to see you all there. I have to stop now as even my fingers are aching typing this (along with everything else!)

Well done everyone.
